The gender ideology with which I grew up had absolutely no room for transness — and it was wrenching, soul destroying, for me. Obviously my feelings of wrongness - a wrong fit between me and what others were insisting was true of me - pre-existed any gender theory that includes trans ness.

Great essay!!!

This. This a thousand times over. I think a lot of trans people are totally wrong about what exactly they are, including past me and probably present me. And I think current trans culture provides bad philosophical starting points for many trans people. But does that mean transgender isn't real? I guess heat also isn't real, given all the problems with phlogiston theory...
